An 11-year-old girl is brought to the physician by her parents. They are concerned because she has brown spots all over her trunk. At birth, she had a few small brown spots. These increased in size and number as she grew older. The spots are not painful or itchy. She has no other symptoms. Her medical, surgical, and family histories are unremarkable. She is not on any medications. There is no history of allergies.
